By: NASW Applauds Expanded Medicare Coverage to Include Routine HIV Testing | MEDICARE REPORT https://www.socialworkblog.org/sw-practice/health-care/2015/04/nasw-applauds-expanded-medicare-coverage-to-include-routine-hiv-testing/#comment-1730159 Sun, 19 Apr 2015 04:30:34 +0000 http://www.socialworkblog.org/?p=6479#comment-1730159 […] The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) applauds the implementation of a final decision by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to expand coverage to provide for routine screening and testing for HIV infection for all individuals between the ages of 15 and 65 years covered by Medicare….Yet gaps remain.  In the newly released decision, persons over 65 years of age will have to request an HIV test.  Research shows that older adults are more likely to be diagnosed with HIV infection late in the course of their disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), disease progression from HIV to AIDS in persons 65 years and older accounts for 53 percent of those diagnosed with HIV.  The need to extend coverage beyond 65 years of age was highlighted in the February 2015 letter submitted by NASW to CMS.
